FAQ

frequently asked
How is hantavirus transmitted?
Primarily through inhalation of aerosolized rodent excreta. Person-to-person spread is rare and only documented for the Andes strain (Argentina).
Is there a hantavirus vaccine?
No vaccine is approved in the Americas or Europe. Inactivated vaccines for HFRS (hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome) are used in parts of Asia.
What is the hantavirus fatality rate?
HPS (hantavirus pulmonary syndrome): 11–38% depending on strain. HFRS (hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome): 1–15%. Early supportive care meaningfully improves outcomes.
Who is most at risk for hantavirus?
Rural workers, campers, hikers, and anyone cleaning rodent-infested structures without ventilation or PPE (personal protective equipment).
